AbortedThe Necrotic Manifesto

★★★★ This cruel bastard of an album is clearly the result of a gangbang between Malevolent Creation, Gorguts, The Acacia Strain, and Pinhead from the original Hellraiser. The aural assault is well produced, and stays tasty and scary and interesting throughout. You will listen, and its sound is like razors through flesh.

TriptykonMelana Chasmata

★★★★ This, finally, may be the perfect doom metal album. The production is a masterwork of fine balancing acts, giving us a sound that is as convincingly menacing as it is lush and layered. The guitars and bass dutifully cut without mercy. Even the vocals, the genre’s typical Achilles’ heel, give just enough bite without tipping into amateurishness (as they so often do).

Protest The HeroVolition

★★★★ Everything you could ever want from a PtH album: blistering guitarwork and jerkily progressive rhythms, plus (dare I say it?) a hint of maturity from the otherwise famously immature Rody Walker. In fact, the entire album has surprisingly more depth, breadth, and ambition than I expected to hear (especially the track “Plato’s Tripartite”).

RevocationRevocation

★★★★ Everything I want from a modern thrash album. Intricate, bloodthirsty, and peppered with excellent and interesting lead guitarwork. Special shout-outs to a very competent Metallica cover, as well as the instrumental Spastic (an instant contender for Metal Moment Of The Year).
