✦✦✧✧ COC’s eleventh album (their first in eight years) is also their first since the untimely passing of drummer Reed Mullin. Warren Riker’s production is a little rough around the edges, which mostly suits the swampy riffage, and new rhythm section Stanton Moore and Bobby Landgraf nicely complement Pepper and Woody. Important note: this is kind of a double album with a split personality: Good God is the pissed-off sludge half, Baad Man the swaggering Southern rock half. Cool concept, but 66 minutes is a lot to wade through, and the back half drags a bit. I’m hearing a great 40-minute album trapped inside an okay 66-minute one. Pick a half and dig in.
