✦✦✧✧ It pains me to have to give this anything less than 4 stars at first blush. With that preface out of the way: this is very clearly the result of a band who have grown apart, evolved independently, and come back together to see how their disparate pieces might recombine anew. The result feels and sounds like Quicksand without Quicksand… which is intellectually intriguing but ultimately less than satisfying. All the ingredients for making a Quicksand album are here: Sergio Vega’s seminal tone, Walter Schreifels’ inimitable and plaintive vocals, Tom Capone’s inventive riffs…. The only thing that’s missing is the band’s drive, their urgency.
