2020: The Year In Metal

Estimated reading time: 4 minute(s)

Jesus fucking christ, guys. You know what kind of year this was. And if somehow you forgot what 2020 was, consider this: over the past 12 months, I have only managed to audition 52 new albums, or 1 per week. That’s something like 40% my usual workload. Do you have albums that I missed? Too fucking bad.

Anyway I did it: I listened to enough extreme music this year, with enough of my wits about me, to actually have a defensible Top Ten List for you. Feast your eyes on this!
  • Protest The Hero – Palimpsest
  • Code Orange – Underneath
  • Intronaut – Fluid Existential Inversions
  • Enslaved – Utgard
  • Haken – Virus
  • The Ocean – Phanerozoic II: Mesozoic | Cenozoic
  • Black Crown Initiate – Violent Portraits Of Doomed Escape
  • Carcass – Despicable
  • Caligula’s Horse – Rise Radiant
  • Psychonaut – Unfold The God Man

And here are some honorable mentions (all of which scored 3.2 stars in my First Listens):

  • The Acacia Strain – Slow Decay
  • August Burns Red – Guardians
  • The Black Dahlia Murder – Verminous
  • Deftones – Ohms
  • Good Tiger – Raised In A Doomsday Cult
  • Oranssi Pazuzu – Mestarin Kynsi
  • Ozzy Osbourne – Ordinary Man
  • Sylosis – Cycle Of Suffering
  • Testament – Titans Of Creation
